The Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Dr. Raijeli Taga welcomed the UNICEF Pacific’s new Representative, Mr. Hamish Young, during a courtesy visit to present his letter of appointment. In attendance at the meeting convened yesterday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade (MFAET) headquarters also included UNICEF Pacific’s Deputy Representative, Ms. Roshni Basu.
Dr. Taga, on behalf of the Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, congratulated Mr. Hamish and wished him well for his new assignment in Fiji – expressing confidence that Mr. Hamish’s appointment will strengthen the cooperation between Fiji and UNICEF in ensuring an inclusive and sustainable future for the children and youth.
Dr. Taga acknowledged UNICEF’s continued support in promoting quality care and wellbeing of children in Fiji – through collaboration in key areas such as education, health, protection from violence, amongst others.
In his remarks, Mr. Hamish reaffirmed UNICEF’s commitment to enhance cooperation with Fiji Government in supporting its efforts towards quality childcare and wellbeing.
The new Representative for UNICEF Pacific looks forward to his new assignment in Fiji and the Pacific and also acknowledged the contributions of his predecessor, Mr. Jonathan Veitch.
With 30 years of distinguished service in UNICEF, Mr. Hamish has extensive experience in leadership, strategic and emergency management, international human rights, humanitarian and environmental law, humanitarian relief and development work, in Africa, Asia, the Pacific and the Middle East. In his recent posting, Mr. Hamish led UNICEF’s emergency response programme in Gaza, as the Senior Humanitarian Coordinator.
The UNICEF Pacific Multi-Country Office works across 14 Pacific Island Countries with focus on these key areas in Fiji and in the region: Health and Nutrition, Child Protection, Education, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Early Childhood Development, Social Policy, as well as Gender Equality, Adolescent Development and Participation.
