Fiji and Cook Islands strengthen relations

Fiji and Cook Islands participated in a commemorative tree planting initiative held at the Thurston Gardens in Suva on Friday 15th August 2025, to celebrate the Cook Islands 60th anniversary of self- governance.
The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Honourable Viliame Gavoka and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Immigration of Cook Islands, Honourable Tingika Elikana, officiated at the event which symbolized the strong friendship and collaboration between the two nations.
On behalf of the Hon Prime Minister, the Fiji Government, and the people of Fiji, DPM Gavoka congratulated the Cook Islands for their historic achievement.
DPM Gavoka said that Fiji and the Cook Islands share common aspirations, sustainable development, cultural preservation, and regional solidarity, stating that, “Our vision is for our Blue Pacific to remain an Ocean of Peace, guided by respect, dialogue, and cooperation. The friendship between Fiji and the Cook Islands is a clear example of that vision in action.”
DPM Gavoka described the planting of the Dilo tree as a reflection of growth, endurance, and hope for the future, and a living reminder of the friendship and partnership between our nations for generations to come.
Additionally, DPM Gavoka said the Cook Islands has become a second home to more than 3,000 members of our Fijian community, many of whom are now proud citizens of the nation.
Hon. Elikana in his remarks, reflected on the significance of the relations between the two nations, while reaffirming the Cook Islands commitment to further deepen the cooperation with Fiji.
Fiji and Cook Islands have enjoyed warm and constructive relations since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1998 and the partnership was strengthened with the opening of the Cook Islands High Commission in Suva in 2022.
The Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable Lenora Qereqeretabua, members of diplomatic corps, Cook Islands High Commission and MFA Team joined in the celebrations.
