The enduring friendship between Fiji and Japan—two Pacific nations bound by shared values and mutual respect—continues to deepen, with history and strategy converging to shape a promising future.
This message was highlighted at the commemoration of the 66th Birthday of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan, hosted by the Embassy of Japan in Suva. The occasion served not only as a celebration of tradition, but as a reflection of a bilateral relationship that has matured into one of Fiji’s most trusted and strategic partnerships.
Japan was among the first nations to recognise Fiji’s sovereignty following independence in 1970. The establishment of diplomatic missions—Japan’s Embassy in Suva in 1979 and Fiji’s Embassy in Tokyo in 1981—laid the institutional foundation for a relationship that has steadily expanded in scope and substance over five decades.
In his remarks, the Ambassador of Japan to Fiji, His Excellency Hiroshi Tajima, reaffirmed Japan’s solidarity with Fiji and the wider Pacific region. Anchored in the principles of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, Japan’s engagement reflects a shared commitment to peace and stability.
A defining milestone in 2025 was the visit by Prime Minister Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka to Japan, where he held a summit meeting with Prime Minister Hon. Takaichi Sanae. The two leaders formalised the Japan–Fiji Lomavata Kizuna Partnership, elevating bilateral ties into a structured framework for long-term strategic cooperation.
Under this partnership, Japan’s support spans sustainable development, climate resilience and sea-level rise mitigation, disaster risk reduction, maritime security, renewable energy, fisheries and aquaculture, forestry, education, border management, airport and port development, waste management, meteorology, public health, women’s empowerment, and parliamentary strengthening. Japan’s Official Development Assistance continues to play a transformative role in strengthening Fiji’s infrastructure and institutional capacity.
Speaking on behalf of the Government and the people of Fiji, Chief of Protocol Ms. Kiti Temo conveyed warm congratulations and best wishes to His Majesty the Emperor of Japan. She reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations and expressed heartfelt wishes for the enduring peace, prosperity and continued progress for the mutual benefit of both Fiji and Japan, and its peoples.
The future of Fiji–Japan relations augurs well. Built on decades of trust and reinforced by strategic alignment, the partnership is evolving beyond traditional aid into a comprehensive, mutually beneficial collaboration that advances prosperity, security and resilience for both nations and the wider Pacific region.
The reception was attended by Chief Justice His Lordship the Honourable Salesi Temo, Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade Hon. Ro Filipe Tuisawau, members of the diplomatic corps, senior government officials and invited guests—underscoring the broad national commitment to this vital partnership.
