
Hon. Ditoka Attends a Reception in Honor of The German-Pacific Parliamentary Group

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Hon. Sakiasi Ditoka received a courtesy call from the first German–Pacific Parliamentary Friendship Group at the Ministry headquarters in Suva on Monday 16/2/2026.
The delegation was led by German Ambassador to Fiji and Special Envoy for the Pacific Island States, His Excellency Dr Andreas Prothmann, together with the Chairman of the Parliamentary Friendship Group, Mr. Ulrich Thoden. Dr Andreas Prothmann
The meeting reaffirmed the strong partnership between Fiji and Germany, marking over 53 years of diplomatic relations and recognising the establishment of the German Diplomatic Embassy in Fiji in 2023, which has strengthened engagements between Germany, Fiji and the wider Pacific region. Discussions highlighted shared values grounded in mutual respect, development cooperation, multilateralism, and commitment to peace and stability.
In welcoming the delegation, Hon. Ditoka acknowledged Germany’s renewed cooperation in strengthening multilateralism, climate and environmental action, and advancing peace, security and stability.
The Minister emphasised that Fiji’s current governance agenda — guided by integrity, good governance, unity in diversity, and sustainability — aligns closely with opportunities for deeper parliamentary collaboration. This includes strengthening legislative institutions and enhancing transparency and accountability across public governance systems.
In his remarks, Ambassador Prothmann congratulated Hon. Ditoka on his new ministerial role and conveyed Germany’s commitment to further enhancing cooperation with Fiji.
Discussions explored areas of collaboration through constitutional and parliamentary development cooperation, including:
- Parliamentary exchanges and capacity-building initiatives;
- Potential twinning programmes between the Fiji Parliament and German parliamentary institutions.
- Policy development support drawing on Germany’s legislative expertise; and
- Research and development partnerships to strengthen parliamentary processes and technical capability.
- Enhanced policy quality and implementation, supporting national priorities such as climate resilience, economic diversification, and social development;
The meeting also acknowledged the Pacific’s Ocean of Peace vision, which underscores the role of democratic governance and transparency in strengthening regional security and stability. Fiji reiterated that durable peace depends on sincere leadership and cooperative regional partnerships grounded in shared principles.
