The Government of Fiji today formalised a landmark partnership with the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) through the signing of the Host Country Agreement, reaffirming Fiji’s commitment to strengthening democratic governance, the rule of law, and inclusive political participation across the Pacific.
The ceremony was attended by Minister for Justice and Acting Attorney-General Hon. Siromi Turaga, alongside members of the diplomatic corps, including representatives from India, the United Kingdom, and Germany. Signing on behalf of International IDEA was the Asia Pacific Regional Director, Ms. Leena Tamang.
The Agreement enables IDEA to establish a formal presence in Fiji, enhancing its ability to deliver electoral support, constitutional advisory services, and inclusive-governance programs throughout the region. Fiji has been one of IDEA’s strongest partners, with longstanding collaborations with the Fijian Elections Office, the Electoral Commission, and civil-society organisations.
Over the past decade, International IDEA has implemented several major programmes in Fiji, and its work has expanded regionally through EU, UK, and German-funded initiatives that support democratic strengthening across the Pacific. The Host Country Agreement now provides the institutional foundation to deepen and scale these efforts.
The Government of Fiji acknowledged the Agreement as a strategic milestone that elevates Fiji’s international profile and positions the country as a regional hub for democratic innovation and support. Minister Turaga highlighted that the Agreement is an affirmation of Fiji’s commitment to transparent, fair, and credible elections, while IDEA recognised Fiji’s leadership and expressed readiness to support ongoing reform priorities, including civic education for youth, electoral preparedness, and governance solutions to address climate-change challenges.
International IDEA is an intergovernmental organisation founded in 1995, works globally to support sustainable democracy.
