Fiji and Solomon Islands further reaffirmed their bilateral relations with the signing of a new security agreement yesterday, providing a stronger and more formal basis for security cooperation between the two island nations.
Fiji’s Coalition Cabinet endorsed the security agreement at its recent Cabinet meeting, which sets out a clear framework for any future deployment of Fijian security personnel to the Solomon Islands.
The new agreement also ensures that Fiji is ready to provide operational support, assistance in maintaining law and order and contributions to international peacekeeping or relief operations in the Solomon Islands.
Delivering his official remarks, Prime Minister Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka stated that the two nations share a strong and enduring relationship which has seen improved people-to-people relationships, enhanced support for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief and support for sustainable development initiatives within both countries.
“Fiji is proud to stand by Solomon Islands and its government over the years, including through our security personnel that were deployed to Solomon Islands in 2021 and again in 2024,” he said.
“This new agreement is a symbol of Fiji’s commitment to the safety and wellbeing of this country and its people. It also signals our commitment to your nation-building efforts. From where we stand, this Agreement reinforces the existing bond of friendship and family we already share with Solomon Islands.”
Fiji deeply appreciates the contributions and unique perspective that Solomon Islands brings to the Forum family.
For this, Prime Minister Rabuka emphasised that Fiji recognises the value of its connection with Solomon Islands as a connected Pacific is a more secure, safe, and prosperous Pacific.
Solomon Islands Prime Minister Honourable Jeremiah Manele echoed similar sentiments, saying that, “From WWII to RAMSI, and most recently the Solomon Islands International Assistance Force — Fiji has always stood with us”.
“This agreement ensures that when challenges arise, we can count on our wantoks to stand side by side.
“Anchored by the values of the Biketawa and Boe Declarations and inspired by our shared Blue Pacific identity, the agreement strengthens peace, stability, and solidarity in our region.”
