Fiji and Singapore have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation on climate action, energy and fuel security, trade and investment, technology, and capacity building.
This was highlighted during a meeting held this afternoon between the Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Honourable Sakiasi Ditoka and Singapore’s Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, H.E. Grace Fu, on the margins of the Pacific Pre-COP31 in Nadi.
Hon. Ditoka highlighted that “for 55 years, Fiji and Singapore have built a strong and trusted partnership. Focus now is to translate that friendship into greater practical cooperation that strengthens resilience, creates economic opportunities and delivers tangible benefits for our people,” Hon. Ditoka said.
He acknowledged Singapore as an important trading and development partner and a valuable gateway for Fiji’s engagement with Southeast Asia, while encouraging greater Singaporean investment in renewable energy, infrastructure (ship building), logistics, digital transformation and sustainable development.
Discussions also focused on energy security, with Hon. Ditoka acknowledging Singapore’s important role in Fiji’s fuel supply chain and welcoming continued cooperation on fuel storage, strategic reserves and Fiji’s longer-term energy transition.
On climate action, Hon. Ditoka welcomed Singapore’s participation at Pre-COP31 and reaffirmed Fiji’s call for COP31 to be a conference where global commitments are translated into delivery.
Minister Fu reaffirmed Singapore’s continued support for Fiji and welcomed opportunities to strengthen cooperation in climate resilience, skills development, technology, green growth and sustainable economic development.
Singapore expressed gratitude and appreciation to Fiji for joining the Future of Investment and Trade (FIT) Partnership, an initiative intended to enhance and promote Trade for Small States; particularly for MSMEs.
FTIP is envisaged to provide solutions to the shift and changes in the multilateral trade space, equipping and enabling members to equitably respond to trade related issues and challenges, including WTO. Through knowledge and information sharing, members will be empowered for trade competitiveness and trade enhancement; an egalitarian arrangement underpinned by mutual respect and recognition.
As SIDS and AOSIS members, Singapore avails itself to provide further support on respective areas of priority for Fiji, particularly AI, Digital connectivity, Cybersecurity, Waste management, Food production and Food Security. Singapore acknowledged work that has been advanced under the established Carbon Trade Agreement between Fiji and Singapore.
