On 21 August 2018, Major General (Ret’d) Ioane Naivalurua, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Mr Peter French, Officer in Charge of the World Food Programme (WFP) Fiji Country Office, signed  the Host Country Agreement formally endorsing the establishment of the WFP country office in Fiji. This was a historic occasion for Fiji and WFP as Fiji now recognizes WFP as an international organization whose mandate covers Fiji and the Pacific. The establishment of WFP Office in Suva augurs well with Fiji's regional hub status.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary thanked WFP for their assistance in Fiji in the aftermath of TC Winston and also their continued effort as materialized in the number of projects under the logistics, food security and emergency telecommunications clusters. He also reassured WFP of Fiji’s support in ensuring that their operations as prescribed under the Agreement is achieved. Mr French thanked Fiji’s sterling leadership and expressed his confidence in the Agreement which will further strengthens the relations and cooperation between Fiji and the WFP.

WFP was formally established in 1963 by the Food and Agriculture Organisation and provides food assistance during emergencies, assists governments in their preparations for humanitarian disaster response and climate change which is in line with Fiji’s COP 23 Presidency and Fiji’s National Development Plan initiatives. Headquartered in Rome with more than 80 country offices around the world, WFP provides assistance to an average of 80 million people in more than 75 countries. It has grown to become the world’s largest humanitarian organization.

With this Agreement formalized, Fiji is poised for the next crest which includes sharing of information and best practices, sustainable projects that promote resilience and blue and green initiatives.
