A timely collaboration between the Fijian Diaspora in United States and Fiji’s Mission in Washington D.C in United States has unlocked opportunities for enhanced reachout to support Fiji’s national efforts in containing COVID-19 and rebuilding livelihoods of the Fijian communities affected by Tropical Cyclone Harold.

Former Fijians, Mr. Satya Narayan and his son Mr. Sajal Narayan living in Amherst, Virginia handed relief supplies worth USD$344,971.00 to the Fiji Embassy in Washington D.C. as their contribution in recognition of the Fijian Government’s swift response to contain COVID 19. The donation is also targeted towards the recovery of communities affected by Tropical Cyclone (TC) Harold which, made landfall in Fiji last month.

The Narayan family, originally from Nasorowaqa, Bua said that they were emotionally moved when they read about double catastrophe of COVID-19 and the landfall made by TC Harold in Fiji.
Although the Narayan family immigrated to the United States in 2000, they have always had Fiji’s interests and the wellbeing of their fellow Fijians at heart thereby aspiring to assist through provisions of timely donations. In 2018 during cyclone Tropical Cyclones Josie and Keni, the Narayan family also donated more than USD25k worth of relief items to Fiji.

In commending this great assistance, the Fiji Embassy in Washington D.C. has expressed sincere appreciation and acknowledgement to the Narayan family for their kind and compassionate assistance that greatly complements, the Fijian government’s commitment towards uplifting livelihoods of the Fijian communities that have been affected by the global pandemic COVID-19 and TC Harold.

The Embassy also conveyed Fiji’s gratitude to the Narayan family for raising Fiji’s visibility in the remote part of Virginia through their business connections.

The Narayan Properties LLC is the only 100 percent owned family business by former Fijian in East Coast and in State of Virginia. They operate businesses that range from gas stations, convenience stores, motels, a trucking company, car dealerships and rental properties in Amherst, Virginia.

The Southern landfill is an impressive setup particularly as it focuses on recycling and minimising the damage to the environment at the landfill.

Other remarkable features of the landfill were its gas collection, electricity regeneration, green waste mulching and water table management. The Hon. O’Connor, an engineer by profession, was particularly impressed and intends to develop a few ideas for the Fijian Government to consider.

The PAC members were invited to attend the Pacific PAC training seminar in Wellington facilitated by UNDP from the 12th to the 13th December.

The PAC members, including Deputy Chair, Hon. Mohammed Dean, MP, were hosted to afternoon tea at the Fiji Chancery.  It was an opportunity for the Parliamentarians to meet the Locally Engaged Staff at the Mission and also update the staff on the work and concerns of the Public A
