Minister for Foreign Affairs Hon. Inia Seruiratu last week held bilateral meetings with his Papua New Guinea counterpart, Hon. Patrick Pruaitch, the Minister for Defence, Hon. Saki Soloma and Minister for Police, Hon. Bryan Kramer in Port Moresby.

The meetings facilitated discussions in areas of collaboration between the two countries, as friends and neighbours in the Pacific Region. During these meetings, Fiji and PNG reaffirmed their commitment to enhance their bilateral relations and take it to greater heights.

Minister Seruiratu reiterated Fiji’s commitment to having a robust regional partnership in peacekeeping, defence, humanitarian and disaster relief assistance with the re-development of Blackrock camp as a platform to boost the region's capacity and capability development and deployment.

At the sub-regional level, strengthening Fiji and PNG partnership within the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) also featured prominently in the discussions, as PNG holds the chairmanship of the MSG.

Minister Seruiratu also discussed the outcomes of the Bougainville Referendum and congratulated the Government of PNG for the peaceful conduct of the referendum.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, there have been increased cooperation in areas such as education, labor mobility, defence and security, trade and investment.

Several members of Public Accounts Committee of the Fijian Parliament visiting Wellington this week took advantage of a visit to the Wellington City Council’s Southern Landfill yesterday to glean a few ideas for waste management in Fiji. This included the Hon. Alexander O’Connor, Assistant Minister for Health, Ratu Suliano Matanitobua, Opposition parliamentarian and Ms. Priya Chand, Parliamentary Secretary who were accompanied by the Fiji High Commission New Zealand staff.

The Southern landfill is an impressive setup particularly as it focuses on recycling and minimising the damage to the environment at the landfill.

Other remarkable features of the landfill were its gas collection, electricity regeneration, green waste mulching and water table management. The Hon. O’Connor, an engineer by profession, was particularly impressed and intends to develop a few ideas for the Fijian Government to consider.

The PAC members were invited to attend the Pacific PAC training seminar in Wellington facilitated by UNDP from the 12th to the 13th December.

The PAC members, including Deputy Chair, Hon. Mohammed Dean, MP, were hosted to afternoon tea at the Fiji Chancery.  It was an opportunity for the Parliamentarians to meet the Locally Engaged Staff at the Mission and also update the staff on the work and concerns of the Public A

A thanks giving program organised by Fiji High Commission in New Delhi, India in recognition of the New Years and Christmas celebrations.

As part of the recent festive season, the Fiji High Commission in New Delhi, India organised a thanksgiving dinner for the mission staff and their families, together with the Fijians who are in India as visiting patients and their caregivers.

The program held at the Fiji’s High Commission in India, was organised in recognition of the New Year’s and Christmas messages of unity, togetherness and prosperity.

A total of 35 Fijians who are currently in India for medical treatments from six different hospitals were accompanied by their families and care givers as part of the Christmas celebrations.

The patients were from Batra Hospital, Max Hospitals, Apollo Hospital, PSRI, Forties, BLK and Artemis Hospital.

Speaking at the event, Fiji’s High Commissioner to India, His Excellency Mr Yogesh Punja said that Christmas was an opportune time for the Fijians in India to get together as one family.

He added that the program has been organised in the spirit of compassion and care for the Fijians in India who are away from their families in Fiji and also took the opportunity to convey his “best wishes for a prosperous New Year”.

The hospital international liaison officers and their patients thanked the Fiji High Commission in India and the ‘Team Fiji’ for organising this opportunity to get together and celebrate Christmas with the Fijian families in New Delhi, India.

The event actually brought back fond memories of Fiji for the Fijian families in India and the celebrations concluded with a ‘Taralala’ (Fijian Dance).

Fiji - Australia Defence Ministers Meeting Marks Significant Milestone

The inaugural Fiji-Australia Defence Ministerial Meeting in Perth, Australia on Monday 16th December 2019 marked a significant milestone achievement in Fiji’s defence cooperation with Australia.

Fiji’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Defence and National Security Hon. Inia Seruiratu, was in Perth for the consultations at the invitation of his Australian counterpart and Minister for Defence, Hon. Linda Reynolds.

The meeting provided the perfect opportunity for the two Defence Ministers to discuss in detail on-going and emerging areas of priority for bilateral cooperation. With the signing of the Fiji-Australia Vuvale Partnership between Hon. Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and Hon. Prime Minister Scott Morrison in September this year, the two Ministers were keen to better coordinate and enhance cooperative arrangements in defence and security matters.

A visit was undertaken by the Ministers to Austal, where Fiji’s Guardian-class Patrol boats are being built. The first of the two Naval vessels, RFN Savenaca, is expected to be handed to Fiji in early 2020, which will serve to strengthen Fiji’s maritime security capability. Partnership in peacekeeping matters, defence cooperation generally, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, are equally important to both the countries.

Minister Seruiratu inspected Australia’s Counter Terrorism capability and facilities based in Perth. He also visited the Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief facility in Brisbane at the end of the program as he returned to Fiji.

Australia and Fiji have a relationship built on long-standing senior level engagements, trainings, maritime security, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief and peacekeeping, which has culminated in the inaugural Defence Ministers’ Meeting in Perth.

Accompanying Minister Seruiratu to Perth were Fiji’s High Commissioner to Australia, Luke Daunivalu, Deputy Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Brigadier-General Aziz Mohammed, Deputy Secretary Defence, Ilai Moceica, and Deputy Secretary Foreign Affairs, Esala Nayasi.
