Fiji has capitalised on opportunities at the Pacific Exposition 2019 in Auckland with the presence  of over 100 companies and 400 invitees for one of New Zealand’s largest ever corporate events.

Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs Major-General (Ret’d) Ioane Naivalurua led the Fijian delegation and joined other dignitaries from Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand and seven Pacific Island countries during the dynamic opening ceremony held at the Skycity Convention Centre in downtown Auckland on Friday, last week.
PS Naivalurua emphasised on the importance of the exhibition as the platform to display “Made in Fiji’ products at the Pacific Exposition. The exhibition was set up by staff of the Fiji High Commission in Wellington, Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism and the Fiji Trade Commission in Auckland.

He said that such events enabled the Fijian Government to position itself as an important stakeholder in exploring untapped potential with the Indonesian market.

The Exposition was held from 12th-14th July, 2019 and it offered cultural programmes and business meeting opportunities, presenting the diversity of the Indonesian and Pacific economic and cultural landscape.

Indonesian Ambassador to New Zealand, H.E Mr Tantowi Yahya, stressed on the importance of engaging the Pacific and promoting opportunities for trade and tourism. Ambassador Yahya has been instrumental in bringing the event to Auckland with the assistance of the New Zealand and Australian Governments.

Several members of Public Accounts Committee of the Fijian Parliament visiting Wellington this week took advantage of a visit to the Wellington City Council’s Southern Landfill yesterday to glean a few ideas for waste management in Fiji. This included the Hon. Alexander O’Connor, Assistant Minister for Health, Ratu Suliano Matanitobua, Opposition parliamentarian and Ms. Priya Chand, Parliamentary Secretary who were accompanied by the Fiji High Commission New Zealand staff.

The Southern landfill is an impressive setup particularly as it focuses on recycling and minimising the damage to the environment at the landfill.

Other remarkable features of the landfill were its gas collection, electricity regeneration, green waste mulching and water table management. The Hon. O’Connor, an engineer by profession, was particularly impressed and intends to develop a few ideas for the Fijian Government to consider.

The PAC members were invited to attend the Pacific PAC training seminar in Wellington facilitated by UNDP from the 12th to the 13th December.

The PAC members, including Deputy Chair, Hon. Mohammed Dean, MP, were hosted to afternoon tea at the Fiji Chancery.  It was an opportunity for the Parliamentarians to meet the Locally Engaged Staff at the Mission and also update the staff on the work and concerns of the Public Accounts Committee.
