Mr.Sainivalati S. Navoti (Sai) joined the Foreign Ministry in February 2004 when he was posted as First Secretary/Legal Counsel to the Permanent Mission of Fiji to the United Nations. He assumed his present post as the of the Director Political & Treaties Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 2nd February 2009 after the completion of his 5 years duty tour in New York.
Mr.Navoti joined the Fiji civil service in 1998 as a Legal Officer in the Republic of Fiji Military Forces. He held the rank of Captain. In 2001, Sai was appointed Senior Legal Officer (SLO) with the Public Service Commission (PSC), a post he held for three years before his foreign posting as a Fijian diplomat to the UN in 2004.
DPT has held various international appointments including President of the Assembly of 12th Session of the International Seabed Authority in Kingston, Jamaica, Vice President of the 1st and 2nd Review Conference of the UN Fish-stock Agreement and Rapporteaur of the UN Commission on International Trade Law’s Working Group on International Arbitration. Mr.Navoti represents Fiji in various fora including Climate Change Negotiations, Fisheries, Oceans and Law of the Sea issues, Human Rights and other Multilateral Treaties Bodies. He has recently completed the drafting of the new Foreign Affairs Decree and is currently drafting the new Foreign Affairs Regulations, legislative initiatives that establishes the framework to usher in reforms in the Fiji Foreign Service.
Mr.Navoti has a Bachelor of Arts (Int’l relations) and a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of Auckland, New Zealand. He also holds a Professional Diploma in Legislative Drafting from the University of the South Pacific and in 2006 was a recipient of the Rhodes Oceans Scholar Diploma from the Rhodes Academy of Oceans Law and Policy, Greece.
Sai is married with three children.
