Amb_Thompson_Successful_Global_Ebvironment_meeting14th July 2012: Fiji’s Embassy in Washington DC USA led by Ambassador Winston Thompson has linked up again with a US NGO to secure development assistance to rural communities in Fiji.

The Embassy recently commenced working a relationship with a Washington DC based non-profit humanitarian organization called Engineers Without Borders (EWB) in facilitating community driven development programs in Fiji’s rural communities. This is the second engagement the Embassy has had with EWB, the first of which was with the San Francisco based EWB on water projects for the Buca Bay Villages. The Buca Bay project started in 2007 and will continue through 2013 providing simple sustainable water system to villages in that area.

The focus of the Washington DC based EWB is to provide sustainable energy systems like solar and introducing innovating farming methods to rural areas in Fiji. Navuso Community in Naitasiri has been identified to pilot the project and EWB is partnering with a Navuso based Non-Government Organization called Vutikalulu Centre.

Briefly, EWB was founded in 2002 whose mission is to support development programs (community-driven) worldwide by collaborating with local partners to design and implement sustainable engineering projects, while creating transformative experiences and responsible leaders. Professional engineers that are involved in EWB are all volunteers.

The Embassy is closely liaising the DC based EWB on this project and are looking forward to the implementation of this development assistance. The EWB team will travel to Fiji for a feasibility study to assess the economic, social, environment and technical viability of the Navuso program in late July. The EWB team has visited the Embassy and was briefed on Fiji.
