Fiji is now officially included in the list of third countries from which imports of fishery products for human consumption to the European Union are permitted. Subsequent to its internal process, the European Commission has published the Commission Decision in the Official Journal of the European Union on 26 February, amending its earlier decision, which now includes Fiji in the list of third countries and territories from which imports of fishery products in any form for human consumption are permitted. The Commission statement said that the last European Union inspection in Fiji, which took place in September 2010, together with guarantees provided by the competent authority of Fiji, indicates that the conditions applicable in this third country to fishery products destined for export to the European Union are equivalent to those provided for in the relevant EU legislation.Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, expressed his appreciation and welcomed the positive development which had been long awaited. He added that exporters had been deprived of exporting to the EU despite the much improved market access conditions negotiated by the Government under the Fiji/EU Interim Economic Partnership Agreement. He urged the relevant stakeholders to re-establish links with the EU importers and to maximise their efforts in order to take full advantage of the provisions under the Partnership Agreement.Minister Kubuabola noted that a number of EU importers had already made contact with the Fiji Mission in Brussels on the status of the import regulation. This positive development will be conveyed to them and it is hoped that they will make contact with their Fijian counterparts for an early restoration of business and shipment arrangements.Minister Kubuabola noted the significant benefits this latest development will bring to the Fiji economy in terms of increased exports, foreign exchange and additional employment in the fisheries sector.
