16th May 2011: The Acting Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation H.E Ambassador Litia Mawi this morning received a Delegation from New Caledonia, headed by Minister Anthony LECREN, Member of Government in charge of Economy, Trade & Environment (including Land Development and Housing). The Delegation is on its way to the Forum Trade Ministers Meeting in Tonga.
The delegation is made up of:
• Head of Delegation – Mr. Anthony LECREN (member of the Government of New Caledonia, in charge of Economy, Trade and Environment & also incharge of Land Development and Housing)• Mr. Bruno IEKAWE, Head of Staff• Mr. Christian TEIN, Deputy Head of Staff• Mr. Francois BOCKEL, Head of Regional Cooperation and External Affairs• Ms. Marie-Paule CARUSO, Attaché of Regional Cooperation• Mr. Bertold SCHMITT, Interpreter
In welcoming the Delegation Ambassador Mawi expressed the Ministry’s appreciation for the positive relations between Fiji, France and New Caledonia. Ambassador Mawi also briefed the Delegation on Fiji’s Road Map to Democracy and progress to date.
In response Minister LECREN explained about New Caledonias recent experiences in constitutional development such as the Noumea Accord. In his advocacy and obvious belief in the legitimacy of the consultative processes that Fiji’s Roadmap has and continues to undertake, Minister LECREN, offered that a member of his Delegation, Ms Marie-Paule Caruso, meets with the appropriate Fiji authorities to share relevant notes on their experience in the processes of engagement with citizens and institutions as they prepare for the Referendum between 2014 and 2019.
Ms Marie-Paule Caruso is the Regional Cooperation Officer from the Department of Regional Cooperation and External Relations in the Government of New Caledonia. The Delegation returns from Tonga next week and is willing to avail Ms Marie-Paule Caruso to Fiji during that period.
The discussions ended with both sides expressing satisfaction at the opportunity to engage and build on their already warm and friendly relations.
