22 September 2011, New York:Fiji’s Minister for Health, Dr Neil Sharma, held bilateral discussions with the Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, today in New York in the margins of the UN General Assembly.
Dr Sharma highlighted the ongoing work that the Fiji Government is carrying out to meet its targets on Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5. The Minister acknowledged the support of the UNFPA sub-regional office based in Suva and the close working relationship it has with his Ministry. He also pointed out some of the practical challenges the country faced in connection with the population movement in-country, such as health issues and the provision of essential services.
In response, Dr Osotimehin expressed appreciation for the work and achievements of the Fiji Government on MDGs 4 and 5. He was particularly pleased to learn of the Government’s achievements regarding MDG 5, of improving maternal health, and encouraged greater efforts in that regard.
The Executive Director pledged the commitment of UNFPA to work with Fiji to address the challenges it faces. Minister Sharma was accompanied to the meeting by Mr Luke Daunivalu of the Fiji Mission to the UN.
