Embassy of the Republic of Fiji to Tokyo, Japan Non-Resident High Commissioner of Fiji presents credentials to Brunei Darussalam |

The bilateral partnership between Fiji and Brunei Darussalam will be enhanced in areas of mutual development interests, following the presentation of credentials of the Non-Resident High Commissioner of Fiji to Brunei Darussalam. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Fiji to Japan, His Excellency, Mr Isikeli Mataitoga, presented his Letters of Credence as High Commissioner of the Republic of Fiji, to His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam at Istana Nurul Iman Palace amidst a grand ceremony on Tuesday this week. H.E Mataitoga was received by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, following the presentation of Credentials. His Majesty congratulated H.E Mataitoga on his appointment as the Non-Resident High Commissioner of Fiji accredited to Brunei Darussalam and assured him of the support from the Government of Brunei Darussalam. His Majesty also expressed to the High Commissioner his wish to visit Fiji. The Minister for Foreign Affairs along with senior officials of the royal court, among others, were also present. H.E Mataitoga also met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs II of Brunei Darussalam, Honourable Dato Seri Setia Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd Yusof. Both parties expressed interests to develop their diplomatic engagements on the principles of mutual friendship and collaboration. There are opportunities for Fiji in a number of cooperation areas, especially in the socioeconomic development and trade. Several members of Public Accounts Committee of the Fijian Parliament visiting Wellington this week took advantage of a visit to the Wellington City Council’s Southern Landfill yesterday to glean a few ideas for waste management in Fiji. This included the Hon. Alexander O’Connor, Assistant Minister for Health, Ratu Suliano Matanitobua, Opposition parliamentarian and Ms. Priya Chand, Parliamentary Secretary who were accompanied by the Fiji High Commission New Zealand staff.
The Southern landfill is an impressive setup particularly as it focuses on recycling and minimising the damage to the environment at the landfill.
Other remarkable features of the landfill were its gas collection, electricity regeneration, green waste mulching and water table management. The Hon. O’Connor, an engineer by profession, was particularly impressed and intends to develop a few ideas for the Fijian Government to consider.
The PAC members were invited to attend the Pacific PAC training seminar in Wellington facilitated by UNDP from the 12th to the 13th December.
